Route - east along Newchurch Road from Mayfield (400), Dobbin Lane, Bacup Road to St Johns’ then back to foot of Peel St. West along Fallbarn to the gas cylinder then eastwards along Bacup Road to the electricity works. South along the east side ofthe electricity works then along the old railway to Warth. North through Staghills woods to Staghills Road, westdown Newchurch Road to start.

12. St John's, Cloughfold
Founded in 1886, the cornerstone is dated 27 April 1889 and the church consecrated Newchurch and St Mary's Rawtenstall. It closed in 1976. The stained glass windows are said to be by William Morris and now in Vancouver Christ Church Catherdral.

14. Rossendale Union Gas Works
Bacup Road, Cloughfold. The Rossendale Union Gas Co was formed in 1854 from merger of the Bacup Gas and Coke Co (whose works were at Cloughfold) and Rossendale Gas Co. The land was rented from Patrick. Dobbin Court now stands on the site and the stone is preserved.

Amalgamated with Waterfoot CP school in 2007 and now an annex of Belmont school.

16. Cloughfold railway station
Built in 1870 and opened to passengers Jan 1871 and rebuilt in 1879 to accommodate two lines of track with an island platform. At its peak it served 30 services per day. It closed on 5 Dec 1966, although a small private siding remained operative for some time afterwards.

One of a number of 'great house' lodges in Rossendale which have survived after the demolition of the house they served. The north lodge was demolished when building Staghills estate. Staghills House was built for Richard Ashworth (of Cowpe Mill) and demolished in the 1950s when the Staghills estate was built.

Tim Nuttall recalls passing the abbatoir during its demolition and noticing a cast iron gateway inside with the inscription, probably the trade name of the construction, at the top: ‘The Shadowless Hall’. He also reminded me of the bull escaping down Newchurch Road until it was finally despatched/recaptured near the market about half a mile away.
